Google Is Retiring Dynamic Search Ads. Here’s What Changes For Your Ad Budget In September 2026.

Google just confirmed the countdown for Dynamic Search Ads. Starting September 2026, DSA campaigns begin auto-upgrading to AI Max, Google’s AI-powered replacement for search ads. By February 2027, DSA disappears completely. If you’re running Google Ads for your business in Kolhapur, Sangli, Ichalkaranji or Pune, this isn’t a small settings change. It changes how your ads get triggered, what data Google uses to match you with customers, and how you should be optimizing from here on.

What’s Actually Changing

Dynamic Search Ads used your website content to auto-generate headlines and match search queries. AI Max replaces that with real-time intent signals, pulling in broader behavioural and contextual signals to decide who sees your ad, not just what’s written on your page. Google’s own data shows AI Max campaigns using all its features see an average of 7% more conversions at a similar cost per acquisition, compared to standard search term matching.

Key Dates You Need To Know

  • Now through August 2026: voluntary upgrade window. You can switch and test on your own timeline.
  • September 2026: automatic upgrades begin for DSA, Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match. New DSA campaigns can no longer be created.
  • February 2027: full DSA sunset. Every remaining campaign is auto-converted to AI Max.

Why This Matters For Maharashtra SMEs

Most small businesses we work with built their DSA campaigns around specific product or service pages, trusting Google to match intent to content. AI Max keeps that foundation but layers on automated bidding and broader targeting. That’s good news if your website content is strong, AI Max leans on your pages even more heavily. It’s a problem if your site is thin, outdated, or missing the service pages your customers are actually searching for.

What To Do Before September

  • Audit your live DSA campaigns and note which page groups are driving results today
  • Voluntarily test AI Max on one campaign now, don’t wait for the automatic switch
  • Review landing pages and service pages. Thin or outdated content will hurt AI Max more than it hurt DSA
  • Go easy on negative keywords. Google’s own guidance warns that over-filtering blocks AI Max from finding valid intent matches
  • Check search term and item group reports every 1-2 weeks during the transition

The Bigger Pattern

This is the third major AI shift we’ve flagged this month, after Google AI Mode crossing 1 billion users and Instagram content getting pulled into AI Overviews. Paid and organic search are moving in the same direction. Google’s AI is doing more of the matching, and it leans harder on the actual quality of your website and landing pages to do it well. Ads can’t fix a weak website anymore. They depend on it.
